Bandhan Bank shares gain as lender enters credit card market

Four new credit card variants target everyday spending, travel and premium lifestyle segments as the lender expands its retail banking portfolio.

Shares of Bandhan Bank gained as much as 4% in early trading on September 8 after the lender announced its entry into India’s credit card market. The bank has launched four credit card variants in partnership with Mastercard, marking another step in its effort to broaden its product portfolio.

The four cards, Sparks, Ignite, Flare, and Lumina, have been designed around different customer spending patterns, covering everyday purchases, travel, dining, and premium lifestyle requirements. By around 1:15 pm, Bandhan Bank shares were trading more than 2% higher at ₹168.49 apiece, according to market data cited by Moneycontrol.

Four credit cards for different spending needs.

The ‘Sparks’ card is positioned towards everyday spending, with benefits linked to categories such as groceries and apparel. It also includes domestic airport lounge access and selected entertainment and fuel-related benefits. The ‘Ignite’ card places greater emphasis on travel. Its features include rewards on grocery and travel spending, milestone benefits and access to domestic and international airport lounges.

The ‘Flare’ variant focuses more on travel and lifestyle spending. It includes airport lounge access, dining and entertainment benefits, as well as golf-related privileges. At the premium end, ‘Lumina’ offers benefits aimed at frequent international travellers and higher-spending customers. These include increased rewards on international transactions, airport services, concierge facilities and premium lifestyle benefits.

Bandhan Bank enters a competitive market.

The launch comes as India’s credit card market continues to expand. Cards outstanding reached 123.8 million in July 2026, up 10% from a year earlier, according to data cited by Moneycontrol. Banks added 1.43 million cards during the month.

For Bandhan Bank, entering the segment therefore represents both an opportunity and a competitive challenge. The bank will need to build card usage while managing customer acquisition costs, rewards and credit risks. Bandhan Bank currently serves more than 3.2 crore customers through over 6,400 banking outlets across 35 states and union territories. Its deposit base stood at Rs 1.65 lakh crore as of June 2026.

The credit card launch expands the lender’s presence in consumer banking and gives it another avenue to engage existing and new customers. For investors, the immediate share-price reaction reflects market interest in the bank’s latest business expansion, while the longer-term impact will depend on card adoption, spending volumes and profitability.
