Bengaluru start-up leverages gut-brain science to convert coffee husk into neuroprotective fiber, attracting high-profile backing
Iom Bioworks is the first Indian start-up to provide a gut-brain connection through microbiome science using byproducts from coffee (husk) to generate prebiotic (pectic oligosaccharides) fibres that are intended to help protect and promote nerve function.
From Lab Research to Commercial Application
The company’s scientific credibility runs deep, starting with Dr. Divyashri G, who heads bioproducts research and is the lead author of a peer-reviewed publication in Frontiers in Pharmacology demonstrating the neuroprotective effects of pectic oligosaccharides. The published research has been confirmed as a valid source of pectin derived from coffee-processing waste, independently of Iom Bioworks. Because of the significant volume of coffee husk generated in India, this company is creating an industrial pathway previously developed by its own scientists.
Proven Track Record and Distinguished Leadership
Founded in 2022, Iom Bioworks has developed its initial product line, has over 500 customers, and has 2 patents granted, with additional patents pending. The company offers microbiome testing based on human DNA sequencing and targeted prebiotics for sleep and stress.
Rs 4 Crores was raised by Iom Bioworks in June 2025 as part of its Series Seed funding round through Inflection Point Ventures.
How It Works
Pectic oligosaccharides are not digested in the stomach and pass to the large intestine, where beneficial bacteria ferment them, producing compounds that have been shown to reduce oxidative stress in neurons and promote neuronal cell health.
Iom Bioworks’ business model has won 1st place at the 2025 National Bio Entrepreneurship Competition, hosted by the top biotechnology incubator in India, C-CAMP.
