Barclays to Cut 5,000 Jobs in AI-Driven Cost-Cutting Push as Bank Reports Higher Profits

Barclays to Cut 5,000 Jobs in AI-Driven Cost-Cutting Push as Bank Reports Higher Profits

LONDON, October 22, 2026: British banking group Barclays plans to cut approximately 5,000 jobs this year as it seeks to reduce costs and improve profitability through greater use of technology and automation, including artificial intelligence (AI).

The announcement came alongside the bank’s third-quarter results, which showed a 12% year-on-year increase in pre-tax profit to £2.3 billion. The bank also announced a £670 million share buyback, although its investment banking performance remained under pressure.

The job reductions represent around 5% of Barclays’ workforce. Chief Financial Officer Anna Cross said approximately 1,000 cuts had already been implemented, with the remaining reductions expected by the end of the fourth quarter.

The development adds to a broader debate over how financial institutions are using technology to streamline operations, reduce expenses and reshape their workforces.

AI and automation reshape banking operations

Barclays’ latest restructuring reflects its push to lower fixed costs and improve returns as banks increasingly deploy technology across their operations.

According to Reuters, developers are expected to account for around 60% of the planned job reductions, highlighting the potential impact on technology-related roles as well as traditional support functions.

However, the announcement should not be interpreted as evidence that every position being eliminated is being directly replaced by AI. Workforce restructuring can also involve organisational changes, efficiency targets, duplication of roles and broader cost-control measures.

For the banking industry, the challenge is to balance productivity gains with the need for cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, customer service and specialist expertise.

Profit rises, but investment banking faces pressure

Barclays reported third-quarter pre-tax profit of £2.3 billion, up 12% from a year earlier. Its latest results, however, presented a mixed picture across trading businesses.

Fixed-income trading revenue fell 19% to £1 billion, while equities trading revenue increased 47%, according to Reuters.

The contrast illustrates the uneven performance of different parts of investment banking, where results can be influenced by market volatility, client activity and changing demand for financial products.

The bank’s cost-cutting plans are therefore part of a wider effort to improve efficiency while navigating a competitive and changing financial-services market.

What does the move mean for banking jobs?

The planned cuts underline the uncertainty facing workers as banks expand their use of automation and AI-enabled systems.

Routine processes, internal support functions and some technology tasks are increasingly being reassessed for automation. At the same time, banks continue to require people with expertise in risk management, compliance, data governance, complex financial analysis and customer relationships.

The pace and scale of workforce changes will depend on how quickly technology can be adopted safely and whether productivity improvements translate into sustainable business gains.

For employees, the shift places greater emphasis on skills that complement automation, including data analysis, technology oversight, regulatory knowledge and problem-solving.

Implications for India’s banking and IT workforce

Barclays’ announcement is relevant to India’s financial-services and technology sectors, where international banks rely on a range of technology, operations and support capabilities.

However, the announced global job cuts do not by themselves establish how many positions, if any, will be affected in India. Any country-specific impact would require separate confirmation from the bank.

Indian banking and IT professionals may nevertheless watch the development closely as financial institutions reassess operating models and invest in AI tools. The likely long-term impact will vary by role, business function and the extent to which automated systems can meet operational and regulatory requirements.

A wider shift towards leaner banking

Barclays’ decision reflects the pressure on major financial institutions to improve returns while adapting to technological change and shifting market conditions.

Higher quarterly profits have not prevented the bank from pursuing further workforce reductions, demonstrating that current profitability and long-term cost strategy are separate considerations.

The key question for the industry is whether AI and automation can deliver lasting efficiency without undermining service quality, operational resilience or the specialist expertise required to run complex financial institutions.

For banking employees, investors and policymakers, Barclays’ restructuring offers another indication that technology is becoming central to decisions about how financial services are organised and delivered.
