Jio IPO Creates History: ₹30,213-Crore Issue Fully Subscribed in Just 100 Minutes

Reliance Industries-backed Jio Platforms has rewritten India’s initial public offering record books after its ₹30,213-crore Jio IPO was fully subscribed in approximately 100 minutes on Wednesday, according to market reports.

The offering is the largest IPO in India’s history, surpassing Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,870-crore issue in 2024. The rapid subscription highlights strong institutional demand for the telecom and digital-services company, although investor participation has been uneven across categories.

The Jio IPO opened for public subscription on October 21 and will close on October 23. Jio Platforms has set a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share, implying a valuation of approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore, or around $108 billion, at the upper end.

The public offering is a major milestone for Reliance Industries, whose last major equity fundraising through a new listing was nearly two decades ago.

Three records that make the Jio IPO historic

1. India’s largest-ever IPO

With an issue size of ₹30,213 crore, Jio IPO has surpassed Hyundai Motor India’s 2024 IPO to become the country’s largest public share offering by issue value.

The size of the issue reflects Jio’s scale in India’s telecom market and the importance investors attach to its wider digital-services ambitions.

The offering is also a test of the Indian market’s ability to absorb very large listings without weakening demand for other stocks.

2. Fully subscribed in around 100 minutes

The IPO was fully subscribed within approximately 100 minutes of opening, according to ETMarkets reporting on Wednesday.

The speed of subscription indicates substantial demand, particularly from institutional investors. However, full subscription does not mean every investor category has received applications equal to its allotted quota.

Demand can vary significantly between qualified institutional buyers, non-institutional investors and retail applicants.

3. A valuation of around ₹10.3 lakh crore

At the upper end of its price band, Jio Platforms is valued at approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore.

That would place the company among India’s largest listed businesses by market capitalisation, depending on the share-price and market-capitalisation calculations used at listing.

The valuation also places the spotlight on whether Jio can translate its massive telecom customer base into sustained growth from cloud computing, artificial intelligence, advertising and other digital services.

What is the Jio IPO price band?

Jio Platforms has fixed the IPO price band at ₹1,065–₹1,119 per share.

The company is offering approximately 27 crore new shares to investors. The issue is structured as a fresh issue, with proceeds intended to support the company’s financial and corporate requirements.

The final allotment and listing price will depend on the IPO process and subsequent market trading. Investors should not assume that the issue price guarantees a listing gain.

The shares are scheduled to begin trading on October 28, 2026, according to Reuters’ reporting on the offering.

Why are investors interested in Jio Platforms?

Jio transformed India’s telecom industry after entering the market in 2016 with low-cost data and free voice services.

The strategy accelerated mobile internet adoption and forced competitors to respond with lower prices and changes to their business models.

Jio Platforms now has more than 500 million subscribers and commands a substantial share of India’s mobile data traffic, giving it a large customer base for potential expansion into additional services.

The company’s backers include global technology businesses Meta and Google, which invested in Jio Platforms during its 2020 fundraising programme.

Investors are looking beyond telecom connectivity to the potential growth of digital advertising, cloud infrastructure, enterprise services and artificial intelligence-related offerings.

Where will the IPO money go?

The fresh capital is expected to support the company’s broader corporate requirements, including capital expenditure and the repayment or prepayment of borrowings at its telecom subsidiary.

Reuters reported that up to ₹2.75 lakh crore was not the figure for this purpose; rather, the prospectus earmarked up to ₹275 billion, or ₹27,500 crore, towards debt repayment or prepayment at the telecom unit. The remainder is intended for general corporate purposes, including capital expenditure.

The distinction matters because investors will be watching whether the fundraising strengthens the company’s balance sheet and supports future investment without putting excessive pressure on returns.

What are the risks investors should watch?

Despite the strong demand, the IPO is not without risks.

Market saturation: Jio has already built a vast subscriber base. Adding customers at the same pace may become harder as mobile penetration matures.

Average revenue per user: Investors will watch whether tariff increases and higher-value services can raise revenue per customer without triggering significant subscriber losses.

Digital-services monetisation: Jio’s longer-term valuation depends partly on its ability to expand revenue from advertising, cloud and other digital offerings. Converting a large user base into profitable services remains a key challenge.

Regulatory risks: Telecom policy, competition rules and data-protection requirements could affect how the company uses data and develops new revenue streams.

Valuation: A large IPO and strong subscription do not automatically mean the shares are cheap. Investors must assess the valuation against earnings, cash flows, growth prospects and business risks.

What does the Jio IPO mean for India’s stock market?

The IPO reinforces India’s position as a major destination for large public offerings and demonstrates the market’s capacity to attract institutional capital for sizeable businesses.

It may also influence future listing plans by large private companies, which could view the demand for Jio shares as an indicator of investor appetite for major offerings.

However, the ultimate test will come after allotment and listing. Subscription figures show demand during the IPO window, but they do not guarantee that the stock will rise after trading begins.

Investors will need to evaluate the company’s fundamentals, financial performance and long-term growth strategy rather than relying only on the size of the issue or the speed of subscription.

For Reliance Industries, the listing represents a significant step in bringing one of its most important digital businesses to public markets. For investors, it is an opportunity to gain exposure to a major telecom and technology platform, accompanied by the valuation and execution risks that come with a business of this scale.
